Improved cookstove designs reduce the use of firewood in rural communities, counteringdeforestation, soil erosion andfood insecurity. They also ensure cleaner combustion than in traditional open-fire cooking, reducing harmful indoorpollution.

CHEMA Programme, a Tanzanian NGO that works in the rural Kagera region, develops stoves that are designed to be a good match for available fuel resources and local people’s cooking habits. It aims to preserve the environment, produceenergyfrom organic waste and empowerwomen and girlsby alleviating their daily tasks.
